Wedding insurance is one of the most affordable lines of insurance there is, in part because each policy only has to cover a single event on a known date. Most couples are surprised at how little it costs relative to the total wedding budget — typically less than what you'll spend on the cake.
Typical price ranges
As a general rule, you can expect the following:
- Liability-only policy (event liability with the venue named as additional insured): roughly $75 to $235 for a one-day event, depending on guest count and whether host-liquor liability is added.
- Cancellation-only policy: roughly $130 to $550, depending on how much coverage you buy (typically $7,500 up to $100,000+ of cancellation limit).
- Full package (liability + cancellation bundled): roughly $160 to $650 for typical mid-budget weddings.
For a wedding with a $40,000–$60,000 budget, most couples land somewhere around $200–$350 for a comprehensive package, which works out to less than one half of one percent of the total wedding spend.
What drives the premium
- Cancellation limit chosen. The single biggest driver. Insuring $25,000 of deposits costs less than insuring $100,000.
- Liability limits and the host-liquor add-on. A standard $1M / $2M general aggregate limit is what most venues require; adding host liquor is usually a modest additional charge.
- Number of guests. Larger guest counts mean more potential exposure, so liability premium goes up at certain breakpoints (often 100, 250, 500 guests).
- Number of event days. A weekend that includes a rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, and a Sunday brunch is a multi-day event and is priced differently from a one-day reception.
- Venue location. Some states have specific rate filings, and certain coastal or wildfire-prone areas may pay slightly more, especially for cancellation coverage close to the event date.
- Whether fireworks, live animals, or amusement rides are involved. These can require a different policy form or a referral to a specialty carrier.
Why liability is so cheap
Most wedding liability claims are small — a slip in the parking lot, a broken light fixture, a stained carpet. Carriers price the coverage assuming a relatively low loss frequency for private, invitation-only events with no admission fee. That's why $1M of liability for a 150-guest wedding usually costs less than the florist's delivery fee.
How to keep the cost down
- Buy early — premium for cancellation coverage is the same whether you bind a year out or a month out, but only deposits paid after the policy starts are protected, so earlier is better.
- Pick the cancellation limit that matches your actual non-refundable spend — not the total wedding budget.
- Skip the host-liquor add-on only if a fully insured, licensed bar service is handling all alcohol service.
- If your venue only requires the certificate of insurance, you can buy liability-only and skip cancellation.
